Round 1 East Kent Tournament

Folkestone U13’s 5 Medway U13’s 12

16th November 2014 Report by Alison Hughes

Unfortunately it appeared that Folkestone were outplayed from the beginning when Medway got a hand into Folkestone’s first line out. Despite Medway’s first scrum of the match being reset for going 45˚, they took the ball straight up field. Folkestone’s defence battled to hold them off but they went over the line. Folkestone was saved however when Medway dropped the ball so no try was awarded. However it wasn’t long before Medway managed to pull the same move off and this time with a successful try and conversion. 0-7.

It looked like Medway were going to repeat their early success but were driven into touch at Folkestone’s 22 by a very determined Ted Bean. Again Medway got a hand into Folkestone’s lineout but Aurelien Austin powered the ball away from the danger area and up towards Medway’s 22, however with no support Folkestone did not benefit.

The rest of the half saw Medway continue their play with Folkestone on the defensive. Folkestone did manage to make some dents in Medway’s attack via Dylan Barnes’ quick feet and Ted Bean’s aggressive tackling. Ciaran Hughes also managed a handy steal in the ruck.

The second half saw much of the same with the some good kicks from Freddie Faiers gaining ground, but with no back up, Folkestone again were unable to profit.

Medway picked up their second try following a knock forward by Folkestone and a Medway scrum. Medway got the ball out quickly and powered through Folkestone’s defence to find the try line. They were unable to convert. 0-12.

Folkestone redeemed themselves through a quick-thinking Dylan Barnes when he stole the ball from the back of the ruck and dived over the line for Folkestone’s first and only try of the match. Unfortunately Dylan was unable to convert his own kick. 5-12.

That is how it ended, a disappointing defeat for the ‘Stones.
