Folkestone 3rd XV 0 versus Faversham 1st XV 19
by Steve Hughes

This was not a 19 point game. Faversham were extremely fortunate with
a bounce from a kick out of defence that got them 7 points and when the
right wing slipped 4 soft tackles to score in the corner they were home
and dry.

Two easy penalties completed the scoring.

Due to injuries and lack of availability, Folkestone were struggling to
put our a balanced side anyway, but when Ian Spicer damaged a fetlock
after just two minutes they had problems with continuity in the
threequarter line.

Folkestone tried hard against a heavier pack and had the edge in the
first half. However, lack of weight and fitness saw the visitors take
command in the last quarter. Up until then, Faversham were ahead aby
only two penalties but then ran in the two tries and converted one.

Initially the game was being played between the 22 metre lines but with
only glimpses of threequarter play the spectators had very little
cheer. It was a beautiful hot sunny day with very little breeze and
several 'water stops' were scheduled before the teams took the field.

Any Burrow Captained the side in the absence of Simon Petts and gave a
cretitable performance at scrum half. Wilson, CDB and Webber held their
own in the front row but the line outs proved to be a lottery. The two
threequarters worth a paarticular mention were Adam Petley at full back
who put in several try saving tackles and Jamie Slater on the wing.
Slater was particularly effective under the high kick ahead and showed
his potential of moving up the ranks.

Both packs were shattered after playing in such heat and were pleased
to hear the final whistle. Faversham were the better of the two sides
on the day but like Folkestone could do with some fitness
training.......
