Shepherd Neame Premier 2 East
Ashford 14 Folkestone 2nd XV 10
4th October 2014. Report by Steve Hughes

This was a game which Folkestone lost rather than Ashford won, played in the first rain for months with a wind blowing straight down the pitch. Consequently the game was played primarily in one half of the pitch. First Folkestone defended their territory and Ashford did the same in the second half.
Folkestone again fielded a mixed side due to work commitments and injury and included for the first time the Dempsey brothers who have recently joined the Club. Ross at centre and Myles at No. 8. More of them later.
The wind and rain didn't help but the number of dropped balls, forward passes and general incompetence was evident from both sides and it was a scrappy game which few of the spectators could enjoy.
To be fair, both sides tried to play open, running rugby but failed and the number of break-downs and penalties must have been as frustrating for the players as it was for the spectators.
Ashford opened the scoring with a simple break through the visitors defence by their hooker which was converted giving them a seven point lead.
Josh Kemp and Kevin Murray were competent in the line out but generally Folkestone could not gain enough ball to make inroads to the home half.
Folkestone however, drew level when Myles Dempsey intercepted an Ashford movement to find his brother Ross up in support who then charged over the line under the posts which James Mead converted. 7 - 7. The score remained unchanged at half time. An injury to Ross Johnson saw him replaced with Kiwi Chris Alexander.
Ashford went further ahead with a break down the right wing and won the race to a kick ahead over the line which was converted. 7 - 14.
Ben Williams looked dangerous at full back and again the half back pair of James Mead and Dan Woolford worked well.
Ashford quickly realised that the crash ball tactics of Ross Dempsey in the centre were a danger and were able to contain his desperate attempts. It will be interesting to see if he plays in the First XV with John Eustace who has a similar tendancy to crash through defences.
There were penalties galore in this match and not all were obvious but from one inside the Ashford 22 m area James Mead slotted it through the posts to reduce the lead to 10 - 14.
Twice Folkestone could have put the match beyond doubt when first James Mead chipped ahead in the Ashfords 22 to re gather the ball but drop it as he crossed the try line. It will take him a little time to live that down!
Myles Dempsey then got into the act and picking up a loose ball inside the home 22 area fought his was to the try line and to everyone watching scored a perfectly good try. However the referee adjudged a double movement and disallowed the score. Folkestone were hammering at their opposition but bad handling and wrong decisions proved their downfall. A game to forget really...
