Against a strong Vigo team which included several 1st XV players Folkestone's pack were under pressure early on in the match. Vigo opened the scoring after 15 minutes with a push over try which they failed to convert Folkestone came back well breaking from their 22 metre line to get a scrum on the Vigo 5 metre line. James Mead pounced on scrappy ball to score a good individual try which he converted to put Folkestone ahead.
Folkestone’s backs continued to be a threat with Damien Dixon making some penetrating runs from fullback Folkestone started to get back into it and came close to scoring just before the break but the slippery ball won the day and the sides turned round with Folkestone holding a slender lead.
Playing up hill in the second half Folkestone worked their way into the Vigo 22 and started to control the game with Will Silvey and Ryan Farrow combining well.
With 15 minutes to go and after a period of concerted pressure Folkestone won a penalty and James Mead stepped up to slot it over with ease.
Folkestone continued to control possession and Richard Dagger took advantage when he picked up a loose pass on the halfway line and cut through the home defence to score under the posts with James Mead slotting the conversion Vigo came back well and scored a well worked try but failed to convert.
Folkestone sealed the game when Francis making his senior debut put Damien Dixon away on the Vigo 10 metre line to score in the corner and seal a 22-10 victory. A special mention goes to the forwards who worked tirelessly and showed the benefits of their pre season training overcoming a much larger pack and in particular the Folkestone front row of Pete White, Alex Box and Keith “Chops” Packham who put the younger folk to shame with their sterling performance. A great team effort all round and a special thanks to referee who was a spritely veteran!
