The U12s at the East Kent Festival.

Report by Andy Parmenter.
A lovely spring day saw the U12s visit Canterbury for the East Kent Festival. A tough group with Medway, Ashford, Sheppey & Sittingbourne (SAS) and Canterbury B awaited them.

First match was against Medway. For the first few minutes Folkestone matched Medway and then as Medway attacked Folkestone’s defence repelled several sorties, but good support play from Medway saw them cross the line. Folkestone restarted, but a couple of well-timed passes and optional tackling saw Medway’s powerful second row score their second.

Following the restart Folkestone chased well and put pressure on Medway leading them to fumble the ball across their try line. Tristan Parmenter touched the ball down, but the referee felt a Medway player had touched the ball whilst over the deadball line. 5 metre scrum to Stone’s but poor handling meant the chance was lost.

In the final moments of the half Harry Wells set of on a run and was tackled a few metres out. Folkestone’s forwards were slow to get there and Medway turned the ball over and charged forward to score.

In the second half Folkestone pressured Medway, but following a line out Medway drove forward to score. Again lack of tackling was to blame. Again Stones pressured Medway but Medway kicked the ball clear and followed up with a try. Lost 0-5.

Next up were Ashford. Early on both sides were matched and as Ashford threatened good defence by the pack turned over the ball to set Toby Yemm on a run only for him to be tip tackled. Stones were able to clear to halfway line. Much of the game was now being played in the middle of the pitch with both sides trying to get clear. The young Stones then went back to optional tackling allowing Ashford to score.

At half time Folkestone were trailing by one try and looking like they could come back into the match. Unfortunately they had not learnt that tackles had to be made and Ashford ran in three more tries. Lost 0-4.

Having seen the next two opponents play, the coaches were looking forward to scoring a few tries and a W in the ledger. The hosts B side were the next foe and a hard fought game ensued. Folkestone dominated the early minutes and when Canterbury kicked long, Folkestone opted for a scrum and ran the ball back with Leon Gurr being tackled into touch a few metres out.

Folkestone kept the pressure up, but wasted possession with sideways running, when a straight line would have sucked in defenders and created space wider. Good surges by Ethan Holt, Lewis Hammerton and Alfie Dove took the ball to Canterbury’s line but the U12s couldn’t cross.

After half time Folkestone carried on as before with Cameron Easby, Ryan Adams and Kieran Dorrell securing their ball and turning over Canterbury’s. George James was supplying quick ball to the backs, but missed passes and knock-ons meant chances went missing.

A Canterbury Scrum 10 metres from their line was taken against the head by the Folkestone Pack and Tristan Parmenter saw a gap, sprinted through and when he has caught a couple of metres out offloaded to Kian Supple who powered over for the U12s first try of the day.

Although Canterbury tried to come back Folkestone continued to play well, but couldn’t unlock the defence even though Max Pavitt and Toby Yemm gave it a go. Won 1-0.

The last match was against SAS. An even start, but following a scrum in their half their backs broke through tackles to score. Folkestone respond strongly with good play from full back Tom Cloke collecting loose ball saw Folkestone threaten the SAS line. After a couple of rucks Dominic Bowden collected the ball but couldn’t find a way over the line or a supporting runner. However when he was tackled the ball was recycled and spun out to the other side of the pitch. Kian Supple was taken out by a high tackle, but managed to off load to Tom Cloke who also suffered from another high tackle. Both players were down and the referee blew for half time rather than allow Folkestone to take the penalty.

In the second half both sides attacked and defences held until Tristan Parmenter managed to avoid the tacklers, dallied with the touchline before scoring in the corner. SAS came back and following a scrum their fly half evaded a number of tackles before sprinting form over half way to score. Folkestone came back and in trying to force play a loose pass was intercepted. The SAS player headed for the line when Harry caught him a couple of metres out and put in an excellent covering tackle. Folkestone won the ball and had their clearing kick partially charged down. However Kieran Dorrell was first to the loose ball, but bizarrely the referee blew for a Sheppey scrum. The ref apologised, and then at the next knock on called fulltime, only to be told by the pitch marshal that there 2 minutes remaining. The players had shaken hands and were leaving the pitch when they were called back. Unfortunately Folkestone couldn’t get out of their half to equalise. Lost 0-1.

Although the results didn’t go their way, all played well and where the coaches asked them to improve they did so. The rub of the green, the bounce of the ball was not always in the U12s favour, but they played with real spirit and they and their parents can be very proud.

Team: Cameron Easby, Kian Supple, Harry Wells, Tom Cloke, Tristan Parmenter, Toby Yemm, Leon Gurr, Kieran Dorrell, Alfie Dove, Max Pavitt, Ethan Holt, Dominic Bowden, Ryan Adams, Lewis Hammerton, George James.
