Folkestone Under 11’s set out to show why we shouldn’t change the game they love so much.

East Kent Tournament 6th March 2016
Report from Jon Morton
In a week where rugby has hit the headlines due to an attempt to ban tackling in schools, Folkestone Under 11’s set out to show why we shouldn’t change the game they love so much. The tournament was held at Ashford and, despite problems with parking, it got under way on time with the opening match kicking off at 10am where Folkestone played Sittingbourne. Folkestone were keen to start the day off well and ran in 5 unanswered game, with tries from Luke Baigent, Ryen Morton, Gene Farragher, and 2 from captain George Foord.
Game number 2 was a tighter affair against a very decent Ashford side. This game ended 0-0 due to solid defence (and a number of handling errors) from both sides.
The third opposition in the group stages was Canterbury 2s. Canterbury have great strength in depth and their second team are a very skilful side, but they were no match for Folkestone who swept them aside with two tries from Harry Dean and George Foord.
The final group game was against Deal who are renowned for being a very physical side, and ended up being cup winners on the day. Harry Dean put Folkestone ahead following a driving maul in the 1st half, and it looked like the Stones would hold on for the win, but the persistent hard running attack from Deal meant Folkestone conceded their only try of the day, and ended up drawing the game 1-1.
Folkestone were confident going in to the semi-final where they had drawn Dover. Folkestone were assertive in defence, and put the ball through the hands with great efficiency in attack. 3 tries, from Lewis Wade, Woody Faiers and George Foord, and another clean sheet saw Folkestone in the final of the shield competition.
The final was to be played at approximately 2pm, so it had been a long day for all involved. Folkestone were to play Ashford, and despite having the lion’s share of possession the Ashford defence held firm. The score line read 0-0 at full time so the game went to sudden death. Folkestone had 4 minutes to cross the line and win the competition. They were switched on and ready to go, and began to make hard attacking lines but were thwarted time and time again, until eventually Gene Farragher powered his way over to score the winning try.
The squad consisted of George Foord, Maddox Francis, Connor Horne, Jim Duncan, Ryen Morton, Bradley Dorell, Harry Dean, Woody Faiers, Gene Farragher, Lewis Wade, Lucio Decicco, Jared and Luke Baigent. They were very quick to attribute their win to their mothers on Mothering Sunday, and would like to thank them for all their support through the season
