Saracens’ Match Day Festival 14th November Report from Roger Smith
On Saturday the Folkestone Fireflys U10 team travelled to North London for a match-day festival at Allianz Park, home of Saracens.
In torrential rain & strong winds the Folkestone youngsters enjoyed the opportunity to plays on the 4G artificial surface that the current premiership champions would be playing on later in the day.
The first match of the day saw the Fireflys play a formidable Finchley first team. In opening exchanges Finchley’s defence closed down all attempts by the Fireflys to penetrate their half, despite strong efforts from Alex Cordell and Kian Buss. Once in possession Finchley were ruthless in a first half where they crossed the Folkestone line 5 times. The second half saw improved tackling by Folkestone, especially from Harry Challis & Jonathan Schermuly, which contained Finchley and saw them add just 2 more tries. This heavy defeat was a sign of the quality of opposition we were to face in the competition.
The second match against Hertfordshire side Datchworth saw William Smith open the scoring with a long individual run. Solid tackling from Zachary Davenport, Jake Langford and James Uden helped to hold the opposition back until just before half-time where they broke through to make it 1-1. The second half saw Jonathan Schermuly put the Stones back in front, assisted by Kian Lambert, before their opponents scored 3 tries to give a final score of 4-2 to Datchworth.
The final match against another Hertfordshire side, Chess Valley, was a much closer encounter with solid performances from newcomers Max Whitehead and Hugh Evans, and a composed display from scrum-half Oakley Price. The Stones went into half time 2-2 after a brace of tries from William Smith. In the second half Chess Valley took a 3-2 lead before William Smith completed his hat-trick with a determined run after a period of sustained Stones’ pressure to make it 3-3. Despite a brave defensive performance, the Stones’ line was crossed once more to result in a narrow 4-3 loss.
After a tough afternoon’s competition without a win, the young players were rewarded with a break in the weather and a chance to watch Saracens beat Toulouse in their European Cup match.
