Blame the Parents

Under 10’s at the Kent Festival Finals – Tonbridge
Another beautifully sunny day (third Sunday in a row) and the Under 10’s were off to Tonbridge. An eventful journey for most, in a very civilised manner some wisely let the train take the strain but it was the drivers who created havoc and set the agenda for the day ahead. Diesel tanks being expensively filled with unleaded fuel, missed junctions on the M20, the discovery of the wife’s car keys in your pocket just as the mobile phone rings angrily. Several parents were obviously excited by the prospect of some long awaited silverware and their behaviour clearly unsettled the players. Mark Edwards wisely decided he was needed for the International fixture back at the Club, nothing to do with the trip to Calais the day before!
A most enjoyable coffee from Costa on the way up and then guided to park a little too far away from Judd’s with younger siblings, tents and kit in tow. Paid £3 each for a programme that was mainly incorrect, up went the tent and time for a warm up. Borrowed the crash pads from the Under 11’s who all looked ready for their matches ahead.
A nice sausage sandwich between the two matches, some sympathy for the Ashford players and coaches whilst watching their match against Aylesford due to woeful refereeing. News that the Under 11’s had won their semi-final but, alas, the Under 8’s hadn’t. Faiers brothers represented in all.
And the matches – Medway B and Ash both beat the Under 10’s, consolation tries from Thomas Cloke, Tom Kedwell and Joseph Faiers. Hard work from all in winning the ball but then given away too cheaply. Scores were 2-5 (Medway, very quick winger) and 1-5 (Ash, passed the ball around).
Play-off ended with enough time to see the end of the Under 11’s Bowl final but they’d wrapped up the trophy in the first half so missed that too. Relatively uneventful journey home. Lost spectacles. Looking forward to next season, need new spectacles first.
