Under 14s shine in the rain

Steady rain greeted the arrival of the Folkestone team at our hosts ground, Old Gravesendians Rugby Club, but that soon gave way to the very warm welcome afforded. Although missing a few injured players, the team quickly gelled and settled down to the game in hand.
Kicking off promptly, the first 15 minutes proved to be a very even bout of physical exchanges with forward play dominant. Both teams showed an equal desire to win the loose ball and the defensive play and tackling was ferocious.

It was not until the 19th minute that Louis Bolton picked up from the rear of the scrum, slipped a couple of tackles and surged forward to score between the posts. Douglas Wood converted, 7 points the better.
The remaining 11 minutes of the first half, despite some very stout and spirited defending from the OG’s team saw Louis Bolton repeat this performance, scoring two further unconverted tries, leaving the half time score at 17 points to Nil.

The opening stages of the second half gave designated full back, Harry Clarke the ability to claim the tackle of the match when facing the rapid OG’s centre bearing down on him. Harry lined the player up and executed a courageous and undoubtedly try saving tackle.
Undaunted the OG’s came back and on the 40th minute their spirit and tenacity was rewarded when their powerful prop went over in the corner for a well deserved but unconverted try. 17 -5.

By now the Folkestone team were playing a very committed and intense game. Jack Hill was expending a huge effort, ably assisted by Dylan Himbury, and Declan Gordon, leaping on every loose ball and clearing out; quick to every breakdown.

Powerful carries by Isaac Bergin and Ben Procter inspired the team and two more tries from Louis Bolton put the final score at 29 - 5 to Folkestone. It was a great day for the forwards, winning most of the scrums, with great hooking from Isaac Bergin who normally plays prop.
Old Gravesendians players, parents and Club ethics were a shining example of a friendly and grounded Rugby Club, which thrives on the passion of playing the game. The fixture also provided players with the opportunity to prove themselves, in extended playing time, and gain subsequent increased confidence.

An excellent rugby day, every single player [and coach] gave his all.
