2 tough games against Maidstone and Blackheath.

Kent U14 Cup, 1st Round. Played at Folkestone Rugby Club.

Sunday 18th November 2018 Report from Coach Jon Morton.

Folkestone were lucky enough to host their group in the first round of the Kent Under 14 Cup this weekend. They had drawn a tough group which would see them come up against Maidstone and Blackheath, both of which are strong competitive teams with a lot of strength in depth.

The first game came against Maidstone, and while the young Folkestone side were doing everything right, they lacked a bit of determination and desire to win, and so were unable to break the opposition defence with any real conviction and went in to the break 0-0.
Early in the second half, matters worsened as one of the many strong Maidstone runners made a break from within his own half to score under the posts, which their kicker duly converted. 0-7.
This however, was the wake up call Folkestone needed as they began to batter the Maidstone defence, and it was only a number of last ditched tackles which kept Folkestone at bay. From an attacking scrum on the oppositions 5 metre line, Stone's number 8 Lucio Decicco picked and muscled over out wide. Ryen Morton nailed the difficult conversion in to the wind to pull Folkestone level. 7-7.
The Green & Whites were not happy with the draw and kept on battling, winning a penalty 25 metres out in the last play of the game. Without panicking, they elected to kick for posts, a decision wise beyond their years. Ryen Morton soaked up the pressure, took his time and kicked straight through the middle of the uprights, Folkestone win 10-7.

The second game against Blackheath was always going to prove to be more of a challenge, as Folkestone tested the depth of their squad against a side who have proved themselves to be one of the best in Kent time and time again. Although the Stones went down 0-17, they can be proud of the way they defended and often threatened the South London side. Captain Gene Farragher led his side well and wasn't helped by injuries to two of his key players Maddox Francis and George Foord. Folkestone haven't had a good start to their season, but these two games showed the talent this young side has, and the potential they have to compete with top clubs across the county.
