EAST KENT U14’s CUP FINAL - Sunday 17th May 2016 played at Dover RFC

Folkestone U14’s 5 Thanet Wanderers U14’s 20
Report from Paul Turner.
On a sunny Sunday morning the Stones took on the current Kent Champions and whilst losing can be proud of their performance against a very good Thanet outfit.
Stones kicked off and for the first 15 minutes the game was very even and flowed from end to end until the Thanet no 8 picked up and made ground before going over in the corner for an unconverted try giving Thanet a 0-5 lead. Stones reacted straight away and following some bit hits from Johnnie Hobbs and Tiarnon Canning Stones found themselves camped on the Thanet line and were rewarded when Tom Whelan bustled his way over the line to bring the scores level 5-5.
Back came Thanet and following slick handling by their threes another score was added to put Thanet ahead 5-10.
With half time approaching Freddie Faiers was unlucky when his well-placed high kick ahead caught the Thanet defence flat footed and as he raced towards the try line the ball unfortunately went dead and the half time whistle blew.
The second half started with strong runs from Adam Butler and Will Rayner and the Stones seemed to be getting on top but no points were added.
Freddie Faiers broke from the Stones try line outpacing the opposition and reaching the half way line before kicking ahead only to be fouled and play to be bought back for the infringement when perhaps advantage could have been played.
At this point Thanet started making some strong runs and ran in two further tries to bring the final score to 5-20 in Thanet’s favour.
Johnnie Hobbs had an outstanding game and led the team by example.
In fairness Thanet deserved to win but the 15 point margin was not a true reflection of the game and this Stones squad can be very proud of their performance and look forward to next season with great confidence.

Squad: Johnnie Hobbs (captain), Ciaran Hughes, Tom Whelan, Will Rayner, Connor O'Brien, Chris Coates, Tiarnon Canning, Mason Perry-Mcloud, Dylan Barnes, Tom Leather, Aurelien Austin, James Hughes, Ted Bean,
