STONES U14’s REACH Semi-Final. Report from Neill Austin

The Stones turned up at Deal Betteshanger for the first East Kent 10's competition in confident mood following their good start to the season.

Folkestone U14 7 Medway U14 0
The opening match was against Medway and the first half was an even affair with both sides going close to scoring. Just before the half time whistle the Stones thought they had scored after a scrum on the Medway line saw the ball pass through the three quarters hands to Harry Curtis who crossed the line only for the referee to rule that the ball had not been grounded.
The second half saw the Stones getting on top of their opponents with Freddie Faiers just failing to score after his long kick forwards ran over the dead ball line. Extra time was looming until Dylan Barnes broke the Medway line and charged to the try line only to be hauled down by the Medway full back with the referee awarding a penalty try, converted by James Hughes.

Folkestone U14 12 Thanet U14 27

The semi final saw the Stones drawn against Thanet A (who had had a bye in the first round) and the Stones took time to settle having made five changes to allow all the squad to get a game. Thanet ran in three scores before the Stones came back into the game and were close to scoring on many occasions before William Rayner crashed over the try line to bring the score to 5 - 15 at half time.
The Stones felt the game was still within their reach but Thanet scored from the kick off with what looked to everybody to be a knock on but the referee allowing the try. A long kick forward from the Stones led to Thanet giving away a scrum in front of their posts which was won by the Stones and quick ball fed to Freddie Faiers who touched down for a try that was converted by James Hughes. Just before the final whistle Thanet ran in a further converted try to bring the score to 12-27 in favour of Thanet.

Squad: Johnnie Hobbs (captain), Ted Bean, Conor Raine, William Rayner, Thomas Whelan, George Bass, Connor O'Brien, Dylan Barnes, Freddie Faiers, Joseph Faiers, Finley Russell, Harry Curtis, Adam Butler, James Hughes, Tiarnan Canning.
