Simon Petts and his mixture of third and fourth team players were up against it from the start, playing against a heavier pack and a more experienced back line. Playing aginst the wind but with the slight slope, Folkestone were being kept in their own half for long periods and only strong defence kept the home side from scoring. Tony Bass and Tom Nunn had really good games in defence and each of them during the match prevented certain tries by well timed tackles. Faversham opened the scoring when Folkestone had committed too many players to a maul and allowed the opposition to create the overlap and score an unconverted try in the corner.The second try came from a lineout in the Folkestone 22m area when Faversham created a rolling maul and marched their way into the corner. No converstion. The visitors did well to contain Faversham to 10 points at half time even after Ian Spicer, the general in the threequarter line, went off injured. Ben Stringer, Dave Tumber and Captain Simon Petts were hard pressed to contain a very lively threequarter line for the home side but all three carried well and were always in the thick of it. Two scores in quick succesion found the home side comfortably in the lead and this was compounded when the home outside half dropped a goal in front of the posts. Folkestone were visibly tiring now but never gave up and twice threatened the Faversham line only to be kept out by the heavier forwards. Bass and Nunn combined to prevent a further try but the last try came from a hefty tackle on a Folkestone player for the ball to be dislodged, kicked ahead and touched down. 32 - 0 As mentioned this was a mixed side of Thirds and Fourths who had not played together before and in the circumstances played well bearing in mind it was Faversham 1st XV who were a well knit competent side with the heavier pack. The reason for the mixture was the result of lack of available players in the higher sides, hence the shuffle up within the sides.
