MARRIED XV 12 SINGLES XV 44
26th December 2016 Comment By :- R.G. Bargey
The single most interesting feature of this social game was that it was refereed by none other than that old doryphore of referees – ‘Moose’ Murray.
Rather steatopygiac in his outward appearance nowadays it was nevertheless a brave move by this ex captain and utility player of many years. But it was not a complete surprise as the old farts of the Club, standing on the balcony, knew that ‘Moose’ (according to him) was wholly competent and knowledgeable about the laws of Rugby Union. That said, because he has spent the most of a long career on the field haranguing, cajoling, criticising, disparaging, excoriating, lambasting and castigating referees.
So now was a chance to observe ‘Moose’ with the whistle – and to objectively comment on his performance.
It was said that he did very well – perhaps so. Perhaps even on the back of this performance he might consider taking it up as an alternative to playing. But before doing so he might well consider his overall fitness – as it was noticed he failed to keep up with play. He also failed to play the advantage law as it was intended and as a result we had a stop/start game which was not the objective. (Although it may have been done for the benefit of Peter White, now pushing 60 years old, I am reliably informed.)
As far as the game was concerned – the Singles won it! It was good see the siblings, who sound as though they have a profession in gentlemen’s outfitting – Beech Brothers, performing well - and the now brobdingnagian Tom Carvill back on the field where he was so effective for the 1st XV.
A number of Club personalities of yesteryear were to be seen not least the old front row of Alex Ruddock, Billy Usher and John Kidson. Also, representing those minnows of international rugby – Wales, was Steve Hughes. New headwear was seen being modelled by John McPartlin – and watching his son playing was the ever young looking - Mark Santer.
Back to ‘Moose’ as it was rather unkindly said that one of his bums was bigger than two of Erica Roe’s bits – but we would not the wish to discourage him from pursuing a career with the whistle and to him and all the players we say – ‘Well done’.
