Folkestone 93 - Burgess Hill 0

Having drawn their match last week and lost the two previous to Dartfordians, Folkestone needed to make a point - and make the point they did. This performance rated with one of the best displays of open rugby I have seen in a very long time and it was a pleasure to see the enthusiasm and commitment that the ‘Stones played with to wipe out any thought that they were slipping from their match winning ways.
It was a great day for open rugby, being dry with no wind and within 90 seconds Folkestone were on the score board when Adam Tolman set up Jon Morton who put Seyhan Fell over for a try which he then converted. 7-0.
Seyhan Fell was again involved when Mike Gardner fed him on the outside to put Richard Dagger over in the corner. No conversion. 12 –0. Burgess Hill could do nothing to stop the ball flowing between the home forwards and backs and were having to defend for dear life. All to no avail however for Folkestone pounded them for the first forty minutes and first Adam Tolman bounced his way through several tackles to score 19-0 and then John Eustace crashed his way over 26-0. Seyhan Fell added another and had succeeded in converting all three tries. 33-0.
The visitors struggled vainly to stop this quality scoring machine but to no avail though it must be said that they were a game bunch and didn't let their heads drop throughout the game.
The home forwards and backs then combined to produce a special team try with Mike Gardner, Adam Tolman, Chris Petley and John Morton getting Kevin Murray over for try 38-0. Soon after Richard Dagger broke through from the half way line and when tackled near the posts rolled the ball back inside for Chris Petley to scoop it up and cross under the posts. 43-0. Seyhan Fell added the extra two points. 45-0. Jack Cox then got in on the act after Kevin Murray cleared the ball off the top of the line and watched the ball fly across the back line for Jack Cox to score, no conversion and the half time score was 50-0, at the rate of more than a point per minute.
Darren Molloy's squad were terrific today and really earned the applause from the crowd. This squad must be the best he has had for some time and the only other possible players missing from the eighteen that played would be Mat Roots, Richie Bowen and Jack Brooks and Ben Brooks. Such a small squad really but they have a real bond and when they are on song (which they were today) there's no stopping them. It will be interesting to see how they perform in the next three weeks when they possibly have three matches which might define the rest of their season with Bromley, Ashford and Horsham in the offing.
Folkestone started the second half as they did the first with Richard Dagger sprinting 50 metres to score and Seyhan Fell converting. 57-0. In the next movement, Seyhan Fell swooped around the defence on the outside only to be flattened by a 'short arm' which saw the perpetrator given a red card. Burgess Hill could have done without that as they were in trouble before being reduced to 14 men. Within a minute a player from each side (Jordan Godden for Folkestone) had been yellow carded for the same incident so fourteen were playing thirteen; David Baxter came on for Kevin Murray, Will Turner was replaced by Alex Randall and Warren Blandford by Steve Doughty. A loose maul then saw Mike Gardner feed Chris Petley who put Adam Tolman in under the posts – Seyhan Fell converted 64-0. From the kick off the forwards took a thirty metre trundle down the pack in a rolling maul and then Adam Tolman, Seyhan Fell and Chris Petley were at it again with the latter crossing in the corner. No conversion. 69-0.
The run rate slowed down for a couple of minutes before Captain 'Moose' Murray urged them on with veiled threats which worked when Chris Petley and David Baxter (on for Kevin Murray) combined to send Scott Stewart for a 'swallow dive' try under the posts, converted by Seyhan Fell. 76-0. Scotty leaves the Club on the 20th December for a stint abroad and he will be sorely missed after making one of the lock positions his permanent slot. Good luck Scotty....
Mike Gardner then broke down the middle of the park in a fifty metre run to score under the posts and Seyhan Fell added the extras 83 - 0. Jordan Godden then hacked on a loose ball, caught the full back in possession and David Baxter got his name on the score board 88-0. From the kick off Folkestone mounted another bout of inter-passing for Jon Morton to score the final try which was not converted. 93-0. Thereby ended a perfect day for Folkestone who had shown the flair we know they are capable off and if they maintain this standard for the next couple of weeks it will be interesting to see where they lay in the league.
Man Of The Match was impossible to nominate and this is once when the whole squad can take the accolade with pride.
