What a fantastic way to finish a tremendous game of rugby - but more of that later!!!
Folkestone were expecting a hard match and appeared to be a little light in the pack with Baxter and Roots being unavailable. However, any Doubting Thomas soon had their fears allayed in the first scrum when Folkestone held their heavier opponents and as the game progressed frequently pushed them off the ball.
Every Folkestone player - every single one of them gave their all in this match and their ferocious tackling and defence was of the highest order and no one could have asked more of them. This was particularly true in the second half when Old Dunstonians had the greater percentage possession and territorial advantage but the Folkestone motto was 'they shall not pass' and except for a piece of good fortune for the home side, stood true.
The opening ten minutes was played between the 22m lines with no advantage either way until Adam Tolman intercepted a pass to thump the ball downfield. His chase delayed the full back and a scrum ensued in Folkestone's favour.
Mike Gardner picked the ball out and fed Tolman who chipped over the flat defence to see Jon Morton collect it in full flight, draw the full back and send Rich Dagger sprinting over in the corner for a quality try. No conversion. 0 – 5, Moose Murray's marauders were on fire and the pick and drive and driving mauls were causing Dunstonians some concern with Tom Carvill, Scottie Stewart and Mike Gardner in the thick of it.
The home outside half was their play-maker and was being closely chaperoned by Chris Petley, the ever youthful Will Turner and Gardner.
However he still managed to create an overlap for a try in the corner which was converted giving Dunstonians the lead of 7 - 5.
Folkestone already knew they had a battle on their hands needed all their resources when Ben Brooks was given a yellow card. However, it was Folkestone who increased the lead with a penalty by Seyhan Fell after a forty metre sprint by Dagger took the ball deep into the home half. 7 – 8. Some good work by Godden, Gardner and Tolman forced the home full back into touch in his own 22m area. Kevin Murray cleared the ball of the top of the line out down to Godden on to Tolman who fed Dagger coming on the inside to score under the posts. A quality training ground move which Fell complimented with the conversion.
Half time score 7 - 15.
A fortunate bobble of the ball in the Folkestone half enabled Old Dunstonians to score an unconverted try 12 – 15. Jack Brooks replaced Ben Brooks and Alex Randall replaced Stewart. Fell then elected to take a penalty from a good forty metres out when everybody thought it was out of his range. He cleared the bar with inches to spare and took the lead to 12 - 18. Old Dunstonians clawed that back with a penalty of their own to make it 15 - 18.
The game was now a real battle for survival and Folkestone were being hammered in their own half but with that old cliche Folkestone put their bodies on the line and were determined that they would not let anyone in for a try. It surprised me that no one was injured in the fierce melee except for John Eustace who damaged his head in a crunching tackle but I was told that it would not affect him....!!
Old Dunstonians could only score with two penalties and brought the game to 18 - 18and were still hammering the Folkestone defence with just 60 seconds to go. Then we had a finish which must go down in Folkestone history when from a scrum in front of their posts Gardner fed Godden, he in turn threw a long pass out to Eustace when everybody thought that a kick for touch would have given an honourable draw. Folkestone were having none of it and Eustace found Dagger who in turn picked out Tolman appearing outside him and with the ball tucked under his arm sprinted for the line and dived into the corner ahead of the defence. Fell then kicked a magnificent conversion from the touchline and the ref blew the whistle on a tremendous win for the visitors. 18 - 25.
Adam Tolman was the talisman again for Folkestone as he has been in the last two matches. His enthusiasm and determined running seems to set everyone else on fire and the passing between forwards and back was a pleasure to watch. Kev Murray was a master in the lineout and although slight for a lock his performance is worthy of mention.
As for the Man of the Match, it must be a joint award going to Tolman for his try and all round play and to Dagger for his two tries and an assist. A tremendous performance all round and the coaching staff can be proud of the spirit and style of play that they have developed in this young side.
