FOLKESTONE 1st XV 29 PARK HOUSE 1st XV 0
Saturday 28th January 2017. London 3 South East Report by Alan Schofield.
Folkestone dominated this game with the strength of their forwards and the creativity of their backs - it all was too much for the Bromleyites to handle.
With five tries and a further three disallowed and umpteen penalty chances at goal refused in favour of scrums, the final score flattered Park House. Nevertheless the zero score line the visitors achieved was only the second in this division in the whole season to date.
Immediately from the kick off the forwards obtained possession and Park House were backpedalling as a Kyle Deakin pass to James Lunnun created a gap that Seyhan Fell charged through unopposed in a well-rehearsed move straight from the training ground. An easy conversion put a 7 – 0 lead on the board after only 3 minutes.
And The Stones continued to pressurise with the visitors seeing little play outside their own 22 metre zone. The back row of Sam Beech, Jordan Godden and John Eustace were very active in winning possession and making ground. It was this trio that started a move down the three-quarter line to find Seyhan Fell charging down the right wing and taking the pass from Jon Morton to crash over for an unconverted try. 12 – 0.
Handling and passing by the home team could have been better – but with the opposition not looking to have much in response to the repeated attacks – it was the time for a cool approach to increasing the margin. But long passes were thrown, and wasted, and handling errors mounted. And all the time Park were conceding penalties, taken quickly but lost in confusion.
The breakthrough came from the spirited back row. Jordan Godden, went straight at the defence from 20 metres out, bouncing them out of the way and diving over for the third try after 22 minutes, Seyhan Fell missing (for him) a comparatively easy kick. 17 – 0. Everybody, it seemed, was keen to score the bonus point try, but it couldn’t be achieved. John Eustace and Ben Stringer tried to breakthrough, and James Archer with Steve Doughty worked together close to the line without success. Michael Gardner was brought up short twice with men outside him – and half-time came with The Stones having spent 85% of the time in attacking positions.
The second half started with Mat Roots and Josh Holt replacing ‘Jiggles’ Ellis and Shane Hills. Park House were prone to kick every time they had the ball – but Seyhan Fell stood deep and fielded these confidently and started counter attacks, linking with James Mead, and finishing with The Stones back in the ten metre area. Jordan Godden dived over two players to touch down- only losing his grip on the ball at the last moment. But it was inevitable, given the balance of the game that Folkestone would score and that happened when Jon Morton seized on a slow looping defensive pass, intercepted and sprinted the 20 metres to touch down for the bonus point try. 22 – 0.
A Steve Doughty injury brought Jake Ellis back on who, almost immediately, was held up over the line – just failing to score. But the ensuing scrum saw ‘Jiggles,’ James Archer, ‘Billy’ Crystal and Mat Roots power the opposition backwards, breaking up the scrum and falling over the line with Joby Crystal claiming the first of three hands to palm the ball downwards for the fifth try. Seyhan Fell making no mistake with the conversion. 29 – 0.
In the final minutes, the Folkestone players, it seemed, were lining up to score. Ben Stringer and James Mead both went close and Mat Roots was brought down after carrying three players on his back for 20 metres but it was all to no avail. Park House were overwhelmed in every department of the game, and The Stones might well reflect on whether they could have doubled the final score.
