Folkestone Move into Third After Dominant Display

Folkestone Move into Third After Dominant Display

Alan Schofield29 Mar - 07:34

Report by Geoff Ottley and Gloria Swinn

Folkestone 64 – 7 Maidstone

Folkestone produced a scintillating performance to overwhelm local rivals Maidstone with a 10-try, 64–7 victory, moving into a creditable third place in the league with two fixtures remaining.

Despite recent defeats ending hopes of automatic promotion, Folkestone responded in emphatic fashion with an attacking display full of pace, precision, and clinical finishing.

The visitors started brightly, applying early pressure deep inside Folkestone territory. However, a composed defensive exit turned the momentum, and the hosts quickly capitalised. In the 8th minute, slick handling across the backs released Ollie Vidgeon, who crossed for the opening try.

Maidstone responded immediately, forcing their way back into the red zone, where sustained forward pressure resulted in a converted try to edge them ahead 7–5.

That would prove to be their only success of the afternoon.

Folkestone hit back straight from the restart, with quick ruck ball and sharp distribution allowing Vidgeon to break clear for his second try, this time converted. The home side began to dominate, playing with confidence and fluency. Charlie Watson soon added another, finishing well in the corner after a flowing move.

Relentless pressure followed, and a clever kick to the corner forced an error from the Maidstone full-back, allowing Ryan Furlong to pounce and extend the lead.

The second half continued in the same vein. Strong carries and fast recycling set the platform for Ollie Jordon-Smith to cross, before debutant Tatenda Majachani marked his first appearance with an excellent try on the right wing.

With Maidstone struggling to contain the attacking waves, Callum Palmieri added another, followed by a powerful finish from second row Tom Clarke.

One of the standout moments came when Tom Reina broke from deep, beating multiple defenders before unselfishly offloading to Charlie Watson for his second try.

Although the intensity dipped slightly in the closing stages, Folkestone had the final say, with Mason Colchester-Long forcing his way over for the tenth try of the match to seal a dominant 64–7 victory.

A commanding all-round performance will give Folkestone confidence heading into their final two fixtures of the season.
