FOLKESTONE SECURE EMPHATIC WIN

FOLKESTONE SECURE EMPHATIC WIN

Alan Schofield24 Jan - 18:32

Report by Geoff Ottley

Folkestone welcomed visitors Vigo from Gravesend, who travelled with just 13 players and had already conceded the league fixture. To their credit, Vigo agreed to play the match as a friendly, allowing the fixture to go ahead. Nevertheless the five points gained put Folkestone in a stronger position for promotion, now in third place but only a point behind Thanet Wanderers.

The game began at a measured pace, with Folkestone conceding an early penalty that was missed by the visitors. The Stones soon settled and began to play their trademark flowing rugby. From a well-executed grubber kick by Callum Palmeri, Alex Price collected cleanly to open the scoring with an unconverted try.

Folkestone’s confidence grew as they moved the ball effectively between forwards and backs, eventually releasing Harry Dean to score a converted try and extend the lead to 12–0. Straight from the restart, the home side maintained pressure, and Benito Decicco crossed for another converted try to make it 19–0.

Vigo briefly threatened following the kickoff, pinning Folkestone near their try line. However, strong defence and a solid lineout allowed the Stones to counter-attack. Quick ruck ball enabled the ball to be spread wide, and Charlie Watson sprinted the length of the pitch, evading several tackles to score a converted try for 26–0.

Although the match became somewhat disjointed, Folkestone soon regained control. Watson again broke through the defence to score his second converted try, followed by a powerful lineout move that saw Jack Baker force his way over the line. With the conversion added, the score moved to 38–0.

The Stones continued to attack with intent, and just before half-time Harry Dean raced in for another converted try, sending Folkestone into the break with a commanding 45–0 lead.

After half-time both sides played with 13 players. Vigo began brightly and were rewarded after sustained pressure in the Folkestone 22, scoring a well-earned try to make it 45–5. Folkestone responded immediately, capitalising on visitor errors to allow Charlie Watson to complete his hat-trick with another try.

Vigo again replied with pressure and intelligent use of territory, kicking into the dead-ball area to allow their winger to score, narrowing the gap to 50–10. From the restart, Folkestone regained possession and showed excellent handling to send James Cousens over for a try.

The Stones’ dominance continued as slick inter-passing between forwards and backs enabled Harry Dean to score his third try, which was converted to take the score to 62–10. In the closing minutes, Folkestone launched one final attack, and from the base of a scrum Scott Stewart crossed for a converted try, bringing the match to a close.
