FOLKESTONE OVERWHELM MAIDSTONE IN DOMINANT DISPLAY

FOLKESTONE OVERWHELM MAIDSTONE IN DOMINANT DISPLAY

Christian Sangiuseppe26 Oct - 20:10

Report by Geoff Ottley

Folkestone hosted local rivals Maidstone in the RFU Community Cup Counties 2 South Plate - Round 2, with both sides eager to make an early statement. The match began in a scrappy fashion, as frequent penalties disrupted the flow of play.
After 15 minutes, Folkestone began to find rhythm, producing open and attractive rugby. Sustained pressure inside the visitors’ 22-metre area paid off when, from a scrum, Ollie Vidgeon broke through the defence to score the opening try, which was successfully converted to give Stones a 7–0 lead.

The Stones maintained their momentum with strong forward drives that kept Maidstone pinned in their own half. The pressure told when Callum Palmeri powered over for another converted try, extending the lead to 14–0.
Maidstone responded immediately after the restart, stringing together some sharp interplay before their centre cut through The Stone’s defence to score, narrowing the deficit to 14–5.

However, Folkestone quickly regained control. A precise passing move through the backs sent Scott Stewart racing down the touchline for a converted try, restoring a comfortable 21–5 lead. Moments later, continued attacking play saw Ryan Furlong cross the line just before half-time for another converted try, giving Stones a commanding 28–5 advantage at the break.
The second half began with Stones showing no signs of slowing down. Crisp handling between forwards and backs created space for Harry Dean to weave through and touch down for a converted try, making it 35–5. From a scrum inside the visitors’ 22, Rob Godden picked up from the base and forced his way over to extend the lead to 40–5.

With confidence flowing, Stones continued to dominate. Jordan Godden capitalised on a turnover to score another converted try (47–5), before slick passing freed Harry Dean down the wing for his second of the afternoon (54–5).

As Maidstone’s defence began to tire, Stones exploited the gaps mercilessly. Dean completed his hat-trick with another converted effort (61–5), then soon added his fourth try as the visitors struggled to contain the relentless pressure (66–5).

With victory well in sight, Tom Reina rounded off the scoring with a final try, sealing an emphatic 71–5 win for Stones in an outstanding all-round performance.
