Folkestone U12’s 0 tries Ashford U12’s 1 try
Friday 5th Sept 18:45 KO Report by Andy Parmenter U10 Assistant Coach.

As part of the new flood light switch on and as the pipe opener for the main Match of a Folkestone XV versus an Ashford XV, Folkestone’s U12’s took on local rivals Ashford.

In their last year as mini rugby players, the U12’s play on half a full sized pitch and with 13 a side. This is a pack of 6 and a full line of backs. It was the first time that both U12 teams played with a number 8.

Both teams started brightly but Ashford made the first breakthrough with a try in the first couple of minutes when tackles were missed. Ashford continued to attack, but resolute defence by the young ‘Stones kept them out, especially with the ability of Kieran Dorrell to snaffle opposition ball in the tackle. Some great cover tackling by Tom Leather and Max Pavitt, who was playing his first major match, prevented Ashford from crossing Folkestone’s line.

Folkestone managed the occasional attack in the first half, but Ashford won the territorial battle, but not the defensive one as all the players stepped up to make great tackles.
In the second half Folkestone constructed more attacks and kept their defensive wall. Strong drives in the forwards, especially Lewis Hammerton and Alfie Dove allowed Tom Cloke to release the backs with Tristan Parmenter, Kian Supple, Cameron Brown and Leon Gurr putting Ashford under pressure. However, they often ran out of support and the moves broke down.

Both teams put on an entertaining spectacle prior to the official switch on. All of Folkestone’s U12’s put in a great effort with Dominic Bowden, Ethan Holt and George James putting in great performances in the pack in both attack and defence – it’s not all about glory and running with the ball. Someone has to do the hard work!!! The backs worked hard in attack and defence and were unlucky not to score. Although there is plenty to work on in training the basics are there and as their first match of the season they played extremely well and all associated with the team are proud of the performance.
