Folkestone Under 16s 46 vs. 0 Whitstable Under 16s
by Phil Keet
On a cold, wintery morning Folkestone Under 16s took to a muddy pitch to play Whitstable at Folkestone and the benefits of a settled, stable squad were soon apparent. The Folkestone pack quickly began asserting their authority, maintaining good ball possession and it wasn’t long before the first try was scored for the home team by Jack Baker following a powerful run. The try was converted by Ryan Morgan and the scene was set for a controlled performance by Folkestone. After the restart the Folkestone forwards took possession of the ball once more and a series of passing moves and intelligent support play by the forwards led to a try by second row forward Lewis Corner. His size and power proved too much for the visitors and he was able to take advantage of some good passing and support play to run in two further tries before the break. By half time the score was 26-0 in favour of the home team following the conversion of three tries.
When the second half started, the visitors rallied and enjoyed some good possession and were unfortunate not to put points on the board, as despite a promising move by their backs which took them from within their half up to the Folkestone try line they were frustrated by an inspired Folkestone defence and were unable to score. It looked for a time as if Whitstable had regrouped and their half time team talk was having the desired effect but Folkestone were having none of it and soon regained the initiative and began a series of interlinking forward and back moves which yielded a further 4 tries.
The Folkestone forwards worked well as a unit with each player making good forward runs and offering good support play and defensive tackling. The backs also linked well in attack and defence and the ability to avoid conceding points for a second consecutive week reflects their excellent work ethic and the strong team spirit that is evident in the team.
