With Hastings and Bexhill Ladies cancelling the planned League game late on in the week, awarding the Stones’ Ladies a walk-over, a hastily arranged game against Aylesford 2s was set up to give both sets of players some much needed game time. With ex-Folkestone and England Ladies skipper Catherine Spencer watching, together with several of the ‘old Folkestone girls’ the new crop representing the Stones put on an excellent display of running rugby.
Stones’ coach Keith Woodward borrowed a player from Ashford and with Aylesford lending several of their first XV’s ‘bench’ players the remaining Folkestone Ladies, resplendent in their new kit sponsored by Bellissima Hair & Nails, Kevin O’Connor Building Contractors and Newport Grab Hire Services, played some exciting rugby. Despite the squad missing several regular players those present worked well together and were definitely not outplayed by their more experienced rivals.
All the players stepped up to the mark and put in solid performances with perhaps Hannah O’Donnell just shading it as the ‘player of the match’ for the visitors with several thumping tackles; despite being run close by several of the other players.
Coach Keith Woodward commented “the game was a great advert for women’s rugby and shows how local, rival clubs can get on and work together. The home coach was very accommodating and expressed his hopes that they can, with Folkestone, help to promote the game throughout East and South Kent”
